5:01 am
a very good morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> breaking news in san jose as firefighters are still battling a garage fire. here is a map to illustrate where this is happening. flames erupted just after 4:00 at the home on moorings court not too far from north jackson avenue. just off-of 680 if you're familiar with that neighborhood. bob redell at the scene where there was concern that this fire could spread to nearby homes. they look like they're in there pretty close together, bob. >> they are single family homes but they're tightly knit together. the cream color building. and that's where the fire is and you see the white smoke, which is a good sign. the fire department, we just spoke with them said they have
5:02 am
not officially achieved, knocked down the fact that you have white smoke means definitely more control over the fire. this started around 4:00 this morning. so, just about an hour ago and the fire department says there's one message they want to get out this morning is the fact that a smoke alarm, fire alarm saved a family of nine people who were inside this home. the mother was awoken by the alarm, it was a mom and we presume a father and then seven children and then the fire department said she let everyone out through the smoke. that gives you a sense of just how close this was to really overtaking the house while they were inside. they escaped. i saw them briefly, they are okay. of course, a little rattled and they are okay. the children are okay, as well. it started as a one alarm fire, it got so severe they had to call for backup. it became a two-alarm fire in a home back there on moorings court a good couple blocks from where we are right now. because these homes are so close together, the fire department said it did spread possibly to
5:03 am
two other homes causing damage to those homes. they don't know the cause yet, but they do tell us it started in the garage. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." we also have continuing coverage this morning. cadaver dogs will walk through of what is left of our old studio in san jose. pr christie smith is live at that scene of the fire. more than dozen people living inside that building at the time of the fire. >> homeless advocates are saying that is really no surprise because homelessness has reached a crisis level here in santa clara county, up about 8 pefr over the past three years. but i want to show you what is happening out here this morning. this is one of the walls that's still standing out here this morning. one is an important number because as you pan over, you can see what the rest looks like. what they're going to do is bring in bulldozers and knock down the burned shell and cadaver dogs will be brought in to make sure no one was left
5:04 am
behind in the abandoned kntv studios. one man told us that he spent eight months living inside of it after being stopped by police officers he was escorted on into the property. what he was doing was looking for his wallet and i.d. what he left on the property. 14 people were living in the empty building with that massive fire broke out on sunday and he believes they all escaped, but he also told us at one point he thought at least 42 people called this home. homeless advocates say that number isn't too surprising that homeless is way up in the county. firefighters at this point say they just want to make sure that everyone did get out okay. >> we do find in a lot of our vacant buildings there are homeless folks that do camp out and it is a challenge because you don't know where they're located. there aren't any specific apartment doors or anything to go to and try to force entry to find folks inside. >> now, the intense heat at the
5:05 am
former studios on park avenue in the fire made it just too dangerous for firefighters and arson investigators to go inside. we did hear that two dogs apparently died in this fire. it is considered suspicious. again, bulldozers expected to be here to knock this down first thing this morning. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, christie. two burglary suspects are still at large following a massive search in palo alto. a burglary happened last night when police arrested one of the three suspects three blocks away and san jose police helicopter searched for the two suspects until 10:00 p.m. less than a month ago, another interrupted burglary happened a block away and this led to an hour's long standoff and those two suspects also got away. santa clara supervisors will
5:06 am
talk about keeping homeless living on the peninsula safe from the elements. at a meeting this morning, they will discuss removing the sunniville armory. used as a weather shelter for up to 125 people. today supervisors will talk about finding a new shelter and how to fund that facility if they do find one. county administrators are talking about replacing the armory with rotating warming centers but those would only open under extreme conditions. they say to cue up the bonnie tyler. not instead a total eclipse of the heart, but a total eclipse of the moon. creating a blood moon. the red coloring comes from light refracting off the earth's atmosphere. we were able to see it here at the nbc bay area studios. another lunar eclipse expected in october. pretty grim. >> for everyone who will have

5:33 am
damage to surrounding homes. the fire department is not sure how many homes they're talking about whether it's one, two or three. the family who did escape did mention to their neighbor that they had problems with wiring. we brought that up to the fire department and they're not sure if that had anything to do with the fire. again, they know it started in the garage, whether it was electrical in nature, it's still too early to tell. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> glad they got out, thanks, bob. continuing coverage of the old kntv studio. this one hitting close to home and what is left of that building will not be standing for too much longer. bulldozers are scheduled to knock it down in just a few hours. 5:35 am
speepal were squatting whether it was 2 or 28. but our understanding is that that building was very well secured. >> homeless advocates say that they aren't surprised at all by those numbers. homeless numbers reached a crisis level in santa clara county with more than 7,600 homeless on any given night. arson investigators haven't had a chance to go and get a good look inside because they're concerned of collapse of what is left inside. the bulldozers expected here as soon as day break. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, "today in the bay." >> amazing to see that, christie, thank you. redwood city police investigating a suspicious death after a man suffering from a head wound was found in a park. police say a man was found about 8:30 yesterday morning, lying on the ground in red morton park. he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a hospital. the man's identity is not yet been released. an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of his
